Communiqué: Indonesian National Critical Minerals Conference, Palu, 9-10 October 2024
Fellow Journalists,
The Indonesian National Critical Minerals Conference (KNMKI) commenced on 9-10 October 2024 in the city of Palu, Central Sulawesi, gathering more than 60 civil society organizations, labor unions, and academics, including representative groups from affected communities. The event highlighted a number of challenges related to governance in the critical mineral industry, with a focus on nickel, within the context of Indonesia’s energy transition plan, employment and community welfare, as well as its impact on public health and environmental sustainability.
A joint product of the conference is a communiqué letter urging all stakeholders in the critical mineral sector, especially nickel, to prioritize human rights for marginalized social groups, the implementation of sustainable environmental, and social governance.
The communiqué alludes to the Prabowo-Gibran government, scheduled to be inaugurated on October 20, that downstream nickel must not be used as just a tool for economic growth. Field data has consistently shown that there are several negative impacts threatening the welfare of the communities and environment around the nickel downstream area.
Attached is a media release and joint communiqué from the Critical Minerals Conference.
