Festival Fi.Nan.SIAL Vol.2: Connecting Finance, Consumption, and Social Impact
Jakarta, 19 November, 2024 — Festival Fi.Nan.SIAL Vol.2 was successfully held on November 18, 2024, at Salihara Theatre, Jakarta. Organized by TuK INDONESIA in collaboration with Indonesia Nature Film Society, the event served as a profound space for reflection and action on how the financial industry shapes global consumption patterns and creates often-invisible impacts on the environment and communities.
Bringing the theme “Revealing Secrets Behind the Industries That Permeate Our Lives”, the festival invited visitors to explore the social and ecological footprints of the everyday products they use. Through various activities, attendees were encouraged to see how their consumption choices are closely tied to issues of sustainability, social justice, and environmental impacts.
One of the most memorable moments was the screening of the documentary “My Chocolate Is Killing People”. The film delves into a tragic agrarian conflict in Seruyan, Central Kalimantan, where a dispute in October 2023 between local communities and the palm oil company PT HMBP escalated into violence, claiming victims. With gut-wrenching and emotional storytelling, the documentary shed light on how irresponsible business practices lead to environmental destruction, land rights violations, and human rights abuses.
The festival experience was enriched with visual art installations and immersive experiences that raised awareness about the impacts of everyday consumption. Interactive activities, such as simulations of consumption impacts and letter-writing campaigns to banks funding destructive projects, provided a platform for visitors to actively engage with these complex issues and take a stand.
The event also featured art as a medium for reflection, including music, poetry, and mime performances, coming together to highlight the importance of social justice and sustainability.
Linda Rosalina, Executive Director of TuK INDONESIA, remarked during her speech, “Fi.Nan.SIAL is not just a festival but a space to open our eyes, see the unseen, and hear the unheard. We want people to understand that every consumer decision we make has far-reaching impacts beyond what we see on the surface. We hope this event sparks collective awareness and inspires tangible steps toward a fairer and more sustainable world.”
The success of Festival Fi.Nan.SIAL 2024 proves that the synergy of art, film, and interactive activities can create powerful spaces for dialogue while inspiring change. This event is expected to be a starting point for many individuals to think more critically and act for a more equitable future.
